Ada’s Powerful Takeaway from the Direct Support Workers Conference

The Direct Support Workers Conference isn’t just another professional event – it’s an inspiring experience that leaves a lasting impact.

From motivational keynote speakers to engaging workshops and invaluable networking opportunities, this conference goes beyond the everyday realities of support work, it reignites passion, purpose, and advocacy.

Ada attended the 2024 Direct Support Workers Conference, and the experience left a lasting mark on her professional and personal journey.

“I was excited to attend the 2024 Direct Support Workers Conference as I like to learn from others in the industry and be motivated by them and their ideas,” Ada said.

With over 20 years of experience in Aged Care, including roles in both community and nursing home settings, Ada spent much of her career supporting clients with dementia and those receiving palliative care.

Two and a half years ago, a friend encouraged her to take a leap into the Disability sector and she hasn’t looked back.

“I couldn’t be happier with the change.”

When the opportunity came to attend the Direct Support Workers Conference, she jumped at the chance and it didn’t disappoint.

“Amazing. Life-changing. Breathtaking. Emotional. Fun.”

As a regional Disability Support Worker, Ada found herself deeply inspired by the keynote speakers.

“One keynote made me reflect deeply on my role and gave me the confidence to be a stronger advocate for our customers.”

“The speaker reinforced the importance of speaking up to ensure our customers receive the care and respect they deserve in the health system.”

The workshops, activities, and connection opportunities stood out as highlights.

“The activities, workshops, and opportunities to connect with other support agencies are unmatched, and I learnt so much from attending.”

A standout moment for Ada was hearing from people with disabilities during the panel session.

“It was incredibly moving to hear firsthand from people with disabilities.”

Even a year on, the experience continues to shape Ada’s work and mindset.

“The impact of the conference stayed with me long after it ended. I was so moved that I bought books from two keynote speakers just to learn more about their lives and philosophies.”

“Even a year later, I still consider it one of the best events I’ve ever attended. This year, I’ll be encouraging all my colleagues to go.”

For Ada, the conference was a powerful reminder of why support work matters.

“This conference is a reminder that we’re not just doing a job—we’re part of something bigger. It reignites the compassion and purpose that brought us into this work in the first place.”

Her advice to anyone thinking about attending?

“If you have the opportunity to attend, take it. You won’t regret it.”

Whether you are a support worker, support coordinator, or team leader, Ada’s story shows just how transformative the Direct Support Workers Conference can be.

It’s more than a professional development event—it’s a place where support workers reconnect with their purpose, gain practical skills, and feel part of a broader, supportive community.
